Profile

Professor Jose received his MSc and PhD degrees in Physics from University of Calicut, India and Mahatma Gandhi University, India in 1996 and 2003 respectively. He was a research fellow at the Dipartimento di Fisica, Politecnico di Milano, Italy during 2001-2002. He was Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati during 2003-2007. In 2007, he joined the School of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Leeds, as Senior Research Fellow and Project Manager and since March 2013 he is the Chair in Functional Materials there. He is currently leading the research group, Applied Photon Science and is also the Deputy Director of Research and Innovation.
Professor Jose has research experience in the areas of novel laser glasses, photonic integration with dissimilar materials, glass thin films, pulsed laser processing of materials, sol-gel processing, laser spectroscopy and ion-exchange with emphasis on applications in bio-chemical sensors, photonic components engineering and energy applications. His current focus is on the ultrafast laser manufacturing of novel functional materials for these applications. He has strong collaboraion with Schools of Medicine and Health, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Biosciences, Physics, Food Sciences and Nutrition, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering on interdisciplinary applications of photonics.
He is currently (2015-2020) leading the £2.5 million EPSRC manufacturing project SeaMatics aimed at developing next generation photonic integrated circuits for optical and data communication in collaboration with researchers at universities of Glasgow, Cambridge and York. SeaMatics exploits a novel CMOS compatible manufacturing platform-Ultrafast Laser Plasma Implantation (ULPI) - developed by Professor Jose’s research team. A £1.4 million manufacturing facility linked to SeaMatics will be estalished in the school in 2016.
He is also co-founder/ Director of spinout companies from the university. His postdoctoral researcher, Dr Matthew Murray, won the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering-ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs’ Award for 2015 and is CTO of a spinout. Professor Jose’s research was/ is supported by funding from NIHR i4i, DSTL, EPSRC, innovate-UK and industries.
